Dr. T’s Take on Nutrition!

1. OPC-3

As your family chiropractor it is likely that my advice regarding your family’s nutrition is important and valuable. That is why choosing the most important and highest quality supplements and making them available to our practice members is so important, and why the decision to choose the right company was so difficult. As you all know, there are many supplement companies out there that offer a multitude of amazing products. When I decided to offer NutraMetrix supplements in my office, the OPC-3 product was the determining factor that made NutraMetrix a must have.

In today’s world, we face many obstacles to our health. One of the biggest is toxicity. Toxicity comes in many forms, from poor nutrition and food quality to environmental pollution and prescription drugs, but it all affects the body in a virtually the same way – by producing irritation and inflammation. We know that these things commonly affect our physiology in two ways, by creating oxidative stress and free radical damage. These negative processes are largely responsible for the ever-increasing incidence of chronic disease, and are also the number one contributor to early aging.

In today’s world avoiding stressors is not realistic, while living the chiropractic lifestyle dramatically reduces our exposure to them and at the same time increases our ability to adapt to them… we can use all the help we can get. OPC-3 may be one of the greatest "allies" we have in this fight.

OPC-3 is a very potent and effective antioxidant, unlike any other supplement out there. The attached literature provides all of its numerous health benefits, but generally speaking by working to neutralize free radicals and oxidative stress, OPC-3 not only helps promote healing and health restoration, but is a major asset in health promotion and disease prevention.

Bottom line, in a perfect world would OPC-3 be necessary? No. However, in world filled with poor food quality, poor air quality, and high levels of stress, OPC-3 is not something you want to live without.

2. Multivitamin (with or without Iron)

Up until recently I was not very adamant about recommending a multivitamin to my practice members. My thinking was that through teaching and advice, I could get all the nutritional sufficiency needed through dietary changes and improvement. After some time, I started to notice that while people certainly made great strides with my help and guidance, eating the "perfect" diet day in and day out is a mighty task. What is more, even those who get close to this goal may still not be doing quite enough.

Reality is that modern day agriculture and farming practices have changed dramatically, greatly reducing the nutritional quality and content of our food. Therefore, even though we may be eating the "right things" in our diet, what we get out of them today is not the same as it was just a few generations ago. Growing up on a farm myself, I know this to be true better than most. While we fought it as long as we could, to keep up with the times and support our family our farm had to make the switch and began using things like: genetically-modified crops, pesticides, herbicides, larvacides, and more. What does all of this mean? Reduced soil quality. So, what does reduced soil quality mean? It means reduced nutritional quality of the food that grows from it.

Therefore to achieve and maintain the highest levels of health, a high quality multivitamin must be part of your daily routine. Thankfully, NutraMetrix has used its Isotonix system to help deliver one of the most effective and "bio-available" multivitamins around. While every Walgreen’s and Walmart has many brands of cheap multivitamins on its shelves, the truth is they are very hard to digest and once (and if) they finally are, the vitamins and minerals are no longer available for the body to use. You don’t have to worry about that with NutraMetrix Multivitamin. No matter if you are looking to regain or maintain health, you can’t go wrong here.

3. Probiotics/ Digestive Enzymes

I have been strongly recommending probiotics since the day I began practice, and for many reasons. As I mention many times when discussing nutrition, growing up on a farm made me realize how poor our food quality really is in the United States. Thanks to a fear-invoking health care system, we now live in great fear of a certain family of little creatures – BACTERIA!

From the moment we are born, we are taught that bacteria (commonly called germs or "bugs") are bad and the root of all illness. Thanks to this we now live in an anti-biotic and anti-bacterial world. Everything from hand soap to bedding to cattle feed is laced with antibiotics. Most kids can’t even walk into the grocery store without them, and the shopping cart, being "typhooned" with antibacterial wipes, sprays, and soaps!

You want to know the real result of all this? It’s poor health. The truth is "The Germ Theory" along with poor nutrition is likely the biggest cause of our horrible health today. This is why probiotics are so crucial to our everyday diet. They combine nutritional and digestive health with immune health. Reality is that we do not get healthier by avoiding germs. In fact, "germs" are more numerous in our bodies than any other type of cell… and we have TRILLIONS of cells in our bodies!

Probiotics, or "good bugs", are responsible for a multitude of health-promoting actions in our body. Their main actions are really two fold. First, to help us breakdown, absorb, and utilize the foods we eat. This is where the digestive enzymes also come into play if needed. Secondly, probiotics are actually one of our best defenses against "bad bugs" that we ingest. Without probiotics we cannot properly digest our food or support our immune system. The negative consequences of this are widespread and can be linked to everything from acid reflux, ADHD, allergies, and asthma. And those are just the A’s!

So while I wish we could get these wonderful creatures in our normal day to day diet, my experience on the farm (and reality) shows us that thanks to pesticides, herbicides, and antibiotic everything, they just are no longer available in enough quantity to help us. This makes daily supplementation crucial to our health and well-being. So, along with avoiding highly sprayed foods and antibiotic drugs and products, taking a probiotic supplement will do you and your children a lot of good!

4. Fish Oil

This one is really quite easy, even Oprah has talked about this one multiple times. Because fish oil, or specifically Omega 3 fatty acids, is so commonly known and scientifically supported to be essential to health and well-being, I am going to spend more time talking about the difference in fish oil supplements here, than the benefits of them. If you want more info on the benefits, please read additional information or ask me specifically. But, reality is, if you’re not taking them yet… START TODAY!

If you are just starting, I highly recommend the Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency supplement. Whenever a popular product comes to market, as fish oils have become lately, many companies and people try and "jump on the bandwagon" and create a cheaper, lesser quality product and market it under the same claims. Nowhere is this more apparent than with fish oils. Fortunately, as I mentioned, most everyone knows of their benefits, however few know of the vast difference between supplements. That is why you have me!

In my educated opinion, Innate Choice is the "biggest fish in the pond" when it comes to fish oil supplementation. From start to finish they deliver the highest quality and most effective product. First off, their sources are the best, cold water anchovies, herring, and sardines. In fact, I have numerous people with severe fish allergies who have no issues with this product. Second, their extraction and distillation processes are top of the line and create a product that is most importantly safe AND effective at the same time.

Perhaps one of the most important qualities of Innate Choice is that they don’t mess with or alter the natural composition of the fatty acids. Like any other food source, fish contain a variety of different types of fatty acids, each with different qualities and therefore different benefits to the body when consumed. There are two important things to consider here.

First off, a good fish oil supplement should not be ONLY Omega 3s. Much like LDL cholesterol that modern medicine has made out to be a terrible thing, Omega 6 fatty acids have health benefits too… WHEN TAKEN IN THE PROPER RATIO! This is the key, the RATIO! The second issue here is that there are multiple types of Omega 3 fatty acids (two main ones, EPA and DHA) and because of this, many companies have chemically altered or skewed their products to try and get more of one. For instance, because DHA is known to be vital for brain function many products, from prenatal vitamins to cereal, have started "fortifying" their product with DHA. This is a worthy endeavor, but one that falls short of anything important.

To get the benefit from any vitamin or mineral, you must consume in as close to its natural state as possible. This is why it would have been much easier to tell you to eat more fish, saving me typing this whole article. However, back to modern day… our fish today is loaded with heavy metals and toxins like mercury. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that you supplement your healthy diet each and every day with Innate Choice Omega Sufficiency. Doing so ensures you both sufficiency and purity, something I feel no other company can give you.

 5. Vitamin D

Alright guys, this one is pretty easy… read this quote from a recent study, "A meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials has found that supplemental vitamin D significantly reduces mortality from all causes." So, let me break this one down for you… IT HELPS YOU LIVE LONGER! I could go on and on about the positive effects of Vitamin D for pages, so here are just a few…

The likely reason it has been shown to reduce all-cause mortality is that it influences over 2000 genes. This is huge, because you only have 30,000 genes in all, so working on 2000 is a major influence on overall health and well-being!

One of the most commonly known effects of Vitamin D is its influence on genes that are anti-microbial in nature, meaning they help fight off infections. As a result, Vitamin D has been shown to reduce upper respiratory infections (ie. flu) which we all know are basically epidemic in our area during the winter months.

This one is a simple can’t miss supplement.
